The Map of Consciousness identifies consciousness (on this planet) on a scale of 0 to 1000 with anger, fear, etc., catalyzing the lower end of the scale and Love, Joy and Peace engendering the upper end of the scale with enlightenment at the top. This map introduces the importance of Courage (at 200) as the break point in the Map and the beginning point in the ascent of consciousness.
The Hidden Determinants of Human BehaviourDr. David Hawkins, 1995.
The above tabulation is described as a mud-map of consciousness because it was inspired by the 'Map of Consciousness' presented by the above author in the third chapter of the above book. It needs to be noted that the blank information in the tabulation has been necessarily suppressed due to observance of copyright.
Selected by color are the lower half of the table in red, and the upper half in green, with the band of gold separating the two halves. The only data retained from the original 'Map of Consciousness' is the column in the table entitled 'Level'. All other information has not been published, and interested students of life should find the book to study the complete picture presented.
The basis for the color coded dichotomy is outlined in the authors own words, in an extract from Chapter 3:
Test Results and Interpretations
The critical response point in the scale of consciousness [by means of Applied Kinesiology tests and analyses] calibrates at level 200, which is the level associated with integrity and courage. All attitudes, thoughts, feelings, associations, entities, or historical figures below that level of calibration make a person go weak - those that calibrate higher make subjects go strong. This is the balance point between weak and strong attractors, between negative and positive influence. At the levels below 200 the primary impetus is personal survival, although at the very bottom of the scale - the zone of hopelessness and depression - even this motive is lacking. The higher levels of fear and anger are characterised by egocentric impulses arising from this drive for personal survival. At the level of pride, the survival motive may expand to comprehend the survival of others as well. As one crosses the demarcation between negative and positive influence into courage, the well being of others becomes increasingly important.
By the 500 level, the happiness of others emerges as the central motivating force. The high 500's are characterised by interest in spiritual awareness for both oneself and others, and by the 600's, the good of mankind and the search for enlightenment are the primary goals. From 700 to 1000 life is dedicated to the salvation of all humanity.
In the following article I discuss the implications of the generalisation of the author's original detailed tabulation into the three (coloured) zones. This may or may not represent the original intentions of the author, however as the author's publication company Veritas, objects to the disclosure of the author's full 'map of consciousness' then we have to be content to simply discuss a simplification of the original.
For this reason we have termed the result a 'Mud Map of Consciousness', being a gross simplification of the multi-dimensional detail supplied by the original author Dr David Hawkins.
As a final introductory remark, I would like to think that it is quite likely that the author (Dr. Hawkins) is unaware of the standard management of copyright which is necessarily enforced in standard business by any publishing company. I would like to see Dr. Hawkins voluntarily place the whole of his 'Map of Consciousness' in the public domain.
Much like the inventors of the software TCP/IP.

A Tri-partite view of Consciousness |
---|
- The findings of the author seem to suggest that that any map of human consciousness is essentially a landscape which has three predominant regions. These three regions have been color-coded, and are discussed separately below. However in the first instance it is better to introduce a summary of these three regions of consciousness as follows:
Terrestrial Ocean of Ego & its Forces |
---|
- Seemingly oceanic nature of terrestrial forces
against which human consciousness constantly struggles.
This realm is the realm marked in red, with the increasingly calibrated series of levels ... shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger and pride. In this realm survival is via the knowledge and use of force verse force, and consciousness is very much held in sway by the tidal influences of the outer world. It represents a terrestrial environment in constant change and flux, a world where a tidal influence is exerted by force over all things.
None of the influences in this realm are reliable, none are lasting, none are energy efficient, and none are worth even thinking about. The student of life should stay out of the red. None of it is worth anything.
Pathway of Courage & the Warrior Spirit |
---|
- The vehicle of courage must be summoned by the student/journeyer
then used to haul ass out of the canyons of existence and the inter-tidal zone,
and across the great plains of the soul, towards the foothills of neutrality.
There is a narrow band of the horizon between the lower environment of consciousness and the upper environmental levels of consciousness, and this is reserved for what the author terms the level of courage. This realm is marked in yellow/gold colour.
Courage should be governed by the realm above, not the realm beneath. Courage is a vehicle by which the human soul become known to the student of life.
Cosmic Ocean of Inner Peace & its Powers |
---|
- The mountain path, upon which gather in the high places,
the inner powers associated with love, joy and peace.
This realm is that marked in green, and corresponds to the higher calibrated levels of consciousness delineated by the author as neutrality, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, joy, peace and enlightenment. In this realm survival is subsumed by association and knowledge of the cosmic powers of the inner realm of consciousness.
The entire planet which is shared by life is open to the cosmic environment which can be seen as another ocean in itself, just alot bigger than what our terrestrial perspective affords. As travellers of the mountain paths know well, such trails reach closer to the sky, and provide direction in this process we call life.
My summary of all this is simple:

A review of this publication by Richard Dawkins might easily stop at this point because in the above presentation, simplified as it is, exists much to contemplate. However in reading though the work, other bits and pieces of literary work invariably caught my attention, and some of it is presented below.

The Highest Level of Enlightenment Digital Download by David Hawkins
I think that some people will find it a helpful self awareness tool. First, what is consciousness? How is it different to regular awareness? Big question, which I am not really fit to answer but here goes: c onsciousness is like awareness, but not exactly. We become aware through observing ourselves where c onsciousness seems to refer to our overall orientation.Size: 52484 Kb
HJ: The level of consciousness scale described below the Hawkins Scale is not intended to pigeon hole you into a numerical framework that defines you as a person — it is merely a highly accurate and useful way to understand where one is in terms of conscious awareness. Each persons unique choices and experiences are valid as they contain a different set of learning opportunities that teach an individual a specific set of lessons that are tailored to their unique level of consciousness. We have all been at low levels of consciousness in certain lifetimes as it is a necessary requisite for achieving the higher planes of awareness. The lower levels contain core lessons that we all must learn at some point in order to attain the full realm of the human experience with all its highs, lows and challenges. These ultimately provide the foundation for elevated consciousness. One can not truly know something until they have experienced it and so we must all eventually pass through every level, from the lowest, fear based realms to those of the highest enlightened consciousness.

Two reasons why I say that:. When we can identify our starting point, we can then create an action plan to improve.

Developed by Dr. David R. Hawkins defined a range of values that correspond to levels of consciousness which include well-recognized attitudes and emotions. Hawkins explains the classification and characteristics of these energy fields to make them easily comprehensible and useful in daily life. It is important to realize that the calibration figures do not represent an arithmetic but a logarithmic progression. Thus, the level is not twice the amplitude of ; it is to the tenth power. An increase of even a few points therefore represents a major advance in power.
